Description
A private walking tour of Mantua begins in front of the Captain's Palace in Piazza Sordello, where your guide waits and the group is just your own party. Mantua is small but striking, with arcaded streets, graceful houses and open squares, and the city is surrounded by countryside.
The first highlight is St. George's Castle, raised for Francesco Gonzaga between 1395 and 1406. It turned into a landmark of the Italian Renaissance when Andrea Mantegna decorated the Camera degli Sposi.
The walk then explores Piazza Sordello, the oldest part of town and the place where Mantua began. The cathedral and the Palazzo Ducale face it, together with other medieval palaces. From there the route continues to Piazza delle Erbe, the town's main market since the Middle Ages.
