Description
This is a large, semicircular arch built around 1300 to connect the Palazzo del Podestà to the Palazzo del Massaro, where the administrator of the city's assets resided. It is surmounted by two triforium windows and has an open gallery above, formed by small arches supported by columns. Beneath the vault, where the white stone alternates with the red of the terracotta, it is still possible to see the iron rings that were used for the "squassi de corda," a torture inflicted upon criminals.
