Description

Giulio Romano came to Mantua in October 1524; Federico II Gonzaga gave him a house in quarter Leopardo (near S. Andrea basilica) and then, since 1527, a new one in quarter Pusterla.
Giulio Romano built his own house in 1544. During XIX century, architect Paolo Pozzo enlarged the façade, by moving the entrance door to the centre, englobing the former lodge on the left, and readjusting lines and decorations. You should not miss the sculpture depicting Mercury with a tup at his feet, which was the symbol of the artist.
Today the building is private, but still some original rooms remain, such as the hall with Giulio Romano's school stuccoes and frescoes.
