Description
The “Arte e Arti” Gallery is the art collection of the Mantua Chamber of Commerce, displayed at its headquarters on Via Calvi, Palazzo Andreani: an eclectic building, somewhere between Art Nouveau and Gothic Revival, inaugurated in 1914 as the Palazzo della Borsa.
Among the older works, the highlights are the Portraits of the Consuls, frescoes from 1450 attributed to Girolamo di Giovanni da Camerino, the allegorical figures Giorgio Anselmi painted in 1772-1773 to celebrate the rule of Maria Theresa of Austria, and Felice Campi's Dead Christ, from 1794.
The rest is 20th-century Mantuan art: paintings and sculptures, with a fondness for landscape and Lombard subjects, from realism to chiarismo and on to abstract works. The building deserves a look too: Aldo Andreani designed it, and his brother Arrigo painted the walls of its grand staircase.
