Description

The Tazio Nuvolari Museum is devoted to the Mantua-born driver whom Ferdinand Porsche called the greatest of the past, the present and the future. It is housed in the former church of the Carmelino, on Via Giulio Romano, and also honors the cyclist Learco Guerra, world champion in 1931.

Here are the cups, plaques and medals won by the "Flying Mantuan" in thirty years of motorcycle and car racing, his helmets, gloves and goggles and his famous yellow jersey with his initials. Vintage footage and models bring the races of the first half of the 20th century back to life.

The piece with the best story is the golden tortoise. In 1932 Gabriele D'Annunzio gave it to Nuvolari with the dedication "To the fastest man, the slowest animal," asking him in return to win the Targa Florio. Two weeks later Nuvolari won it, and the tortoise became his good-luck charm.
