Description

The Fish Market of Giulio Romano (or Loggia of Giulio Romano) is a historic building in Mantua.

Built in 1536 based on the design of the architect of Palazzo Te, it was dedicated to the fish trade. The structure consisted of two arcades with rounded arches in the typical Giulio Romano style, with an attic above where rectangular windows framed by pilasters opened. The fish market was located on either side of the medieval bridge that crossed the Rio, a waterway that flows through the city of Mantua from Lake Superiore to Lake Inferiore. It was connected to the adjacent Beccherie, the public slaughterhouse built in the same years, also designed by Giulio Romano, but which was demolished in 1872. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Fish Market was also renovated, losing its original function.
