Description

Piazza Canossa is a small pedestrian square in the historic center of Mantua, where Via Fratelli Bandiera, Via Verdi and Via Fernelli meet: a quiet corner between a Baroque palazzo, a little church and an Art Nouveau kiosk.

Its most theatrical side is Palazzo Canossa, built between 1659 and 1673 by the family that gives the square its name, with two marble dogs beneath the balcony. Opposite stands the church of the Madonna del Terremoto, from 1754, built because the city believed the Madonna had protected it during the earthquake of 1693.

The square is rounded off by an iron-and-glass Art Nouveau kiosk, a marble fountain and an 18th-century palazzo with a porticoed loggia, also built by the Canossa.

Filmmakers have picked it more than once: it appears in Bernardo Bertolucci's 1900 and in Daniele Luchetti's Il portaborse.
